Internal Family Systems
and
Ego State Therapy

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy is a transformative approach to healing that views the mind as composed of distinct "parts" or sub-personalities, each with its own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. These parts often assume roles shaped by past experiences, trauma, or unresolved conflicts. They can include protective parts (such as the inner critic or perfectionist) and wounded parts (such as the vulnerable inner child). IFS aims to help individuals understand, integrate, and heal these parts by cultivating self-awareness, self-compassion, and a deeper connection to the "Self"—the core, compassionate, and wise aspect of the person.  Each part is valued and respected, welcomed, and invited to be understood.

This model closely aligns with ego state work, which focuses on identifying and working with different states of consciousness or ego states that influence behavior and emotions.

By gently guiding clients to access and communicate with these parts, parts work encourages healing through internal dialogue, empathy, and the restoration of balance within the psyche. As clients learn to recognize and release the burdens carried by these parts, they often experience greater emotional harmony, improved relationships, and a deeper sense of inner peace.

Dr. Camden has advanced training in IFS Therapy and also integrates her EMDR training to include techniques from Ego State Psychology.  Often, IFS and EMDR work wonderfully together.
